Before an interview begins, ASK THE SUBJECT FOR SPECIFIC CONSENT TO TAPE THE INTERVIEW. It is against the law in some states in the United States to tape anyone without his or her permission, this includes during interviews in-person and via phone call. The subject must agree to be recorded in order to continue the interview. Taping interviews can help a reporter accurately quote the subject; however, it is important to always take complete and accurate notes as well. In other words, don’t depend entirely on the recording. Recordings will let you down. That is a fact. Some sources may refuse to be taped; respect their request and take hand notes.
